Sergio Garcia or the art of cannabis in sculpture
Sergio Garcia was born in 1969 in Havana (Cuba) and currently lives in Miami. His works suggest a human reflection on today's social and political environment.
Cannabic sculptures
Sergio Garcia has created numerous sculptures, including a series on the Cannabis that are exposed to Hash and Hemp Marihuana Museum in Amsterdam and Barcelona, reputed to be «the world's oldest and most important museum dedicated to cannabis sativa».
Recreational cannabis is no longer a taboo subject. On the contrary, more and more people are indulging in the pleasures of weed in all its forms (joints, bongs, vaporizers...), and its cultivation has been spreading since the 1960s. Despite its prohibition in most countries, consumption is on the increase, as are the artistic works associated with it.
I don't mean to be blunt (2014)
This work by Sergio Garcia comes from Miami. He created two versions of this sculpture so that they could be displayed in both Amsterdam and Barcelona. It shows two sculpted arms rolling a blunt. On the right arm, there's a tattoo of a bald eagle, the symbol of the United States. The title, too, has a double meaning: «Blunt» in English means «direct», so we have the direct side of the sculpture, which shows «that he doesn't want to be too direct», while rolling a blunt.
The artist is a big fan of cannabis. «My wife smokes every day, and a lot of people around me are cannabis consumers. I don't smoke a lot, but I tend to consume in a festive environment, like a festival for example. I'd rather consume ‘edibles’ than smoke joints,» he told the Prohbtd website.
It's supposed To Make You Feel Something (2014) («It's supposed to make you feel like you're doing something»)
Among the works dedicated to cannabis on display at the Hash Museum, It features a woman with silver nails and a diamond ring, who is also rolling a firecracker.
