Robin Reda wants to create a «working group» of pro-legalization elected representatives
Robin Reda, Les Républicains (LR) MP for Essonne, who has already taken a stand for controlled legalization of cannabis, told Libération that he wanted to «set up a small working group» with elected representatives from the right and beyond.
The basis of his work? The 3 LR mayors who have called for the legalization of cannabis in a recent article, but also the 80 parliamentarians who responded to it recalling their attachment to French prohibition, that Robin Reda does not spare:
«These 80 members of parliament are persisting in their error. My three mayoral colleagues may have been a little hasty, but their position is interesting, original and iconoclastic, and it creates debate. On the other hand, we have an ideological and rigid position.» he declares. He added: «It's pretty irresponsible of the Right to close the curtain on a subject that links public safety, the country's economy and the health of the French people.»
Robin Reda also considers the subject over time and sees it as a campaign theme that will transcend all divisions:
«Inevitably, at some point, the debate is going to get out of hand in public opinion, and if the right doesn't change, we'll be in the doldrums. If we don't want a left-wing liberal-libertarian legalization imposed on us, with a permissive approach to consumption, we need to think about legalization with a security objective, and one that will help to dry up this traffic,» he explains.
