Which US states will vote for cannabis in November 2018?
The legalization of cannabis in the United States is to mobilize citizens through popular initiatives and referendums put to the vote in November of even-numbered years. This November will see some states vote for or against the legalization of cannabis, for medical or recreational use. Here's a list of the various cannabis initiatives that may take place in the United States in November 2018.
The November's main initiative will take place at Michigan, where the state has already approved a vote to legalize cannabis for adults. The plan is to allow adults to possess and consume cannabis for recreational purposes, and to grow up to 12 plants in their homes. The measure would also legalize the cultivation of industrial hemp. Medical cannabis has been legal here since 2008.
Oklahoma will not wait until November, but will vote as early as June to legalize medical cannabis. The state tried to pass a very restrictive bill, which failed. The popular initiative will decide whether or not Oklahomans will have access to medical cannabis.
Utah is also looking to include a ballot initiative to legalize medical cannabis in November. A sufficient number of signatures have already been collected, but anti-cannabis campaigners are currently attempting to to nip the initiative in the bud.
The Missouri is also trying to legalize medical cannabis. The signatures have been collected, but the measure has not yet been officially included in the November ballot. It would authorize the medical and personal use of cannabis, its sale and automatically release all prisoners incarcerated for non-violent cannabis-related crimes. The measure would also prohibit the state from using its funds to enforce federal cannabis laws that conflict with state laws.
The initiative that's furthest from reality at the moment concerns Ohio. The state has validated the referendum initiative to legalize recreational cannabis, which must now go out and collect enough signatures to appear there.
This gives us a potential total of 3 medical and 2 recreational states in 2018, to add to the 30 medical and 9 recreational states already in existence.
