Paraguay: the President signs the legalization of medical cannabis
Paraguay, one of South America's biggest cannabis producers, has officially legalized cannabis for recreational and research use.
President Horacio Cartes signed the bill establishing a regulatory framework for the production of Cannabis in this country of almost 7 million inhabitants. The Senate had approved the measure in early December.

The new law removes cannabis from Paraguay's list of dangerous drugs. Self-cultivation of cannabis remains illegal, but local production will be set up to meet the needs of patients.
In addition, the law creates a new avenue for research on the plant. Patients will be able to receive their medicines free of charge if they lend themselves to research. Paraguay will supply CBD oil and other cannabis products to volunteers.
All patients taking part in this program will be registered in the Compulsory National Register of Users of Derivative Products, overseen by the Ministry of Public Health.
