Mexico authorizes 4 people to grow cannabis

In a decision that could pave the way for Legalization of cannabis in Mexico, in early November, the country's Supreme Court authorized four people to grow their own marijuana plants for strictly personal use.

These four people are members of an organization called SMART (Sociedad Mexicana de Autoconsumo Responsable y Tolerante) and hope to reduce the influence of drug cartels. The ruling was upheld by a vote of 4 to 1 by the First Chamber of the Mexican Supreme Court.

The arguments focused on the right to self-determination and the importance of debating the issue at a time when Mexico is ravaged by drug-related violence.

The ruling applies only to the four members of the association. Composed of an accountant, two lawyers, and an activist, the group was formed to combat a culture of crime in the drugs and prohibitionist policies that violate rights of man.

None of them smokes cannabis, and they have no intention of starting now. While the Mexico allows possession of 5 grams of cannabis For personal use, these are the only people who can legally grow cannabis there in unlimited quantities.

Mexico is still plagued by terrible violence linked to drug trafficking. The government has certainly tried to counter the cartels by deploying entire container loads of troops. But the recent discovery of a tunnel nearly 1 km long and more than 12 metric tons of marijuana beneath the U.S. border clearly shows that prohibition is not currently preventing the cartels from expanding their thriving business.
