Materia Malta achieves first commercial export of medical cannabis to Germany
Materia Malta has shipped medical cannabis products to Germany, marking the first shipment of its kind to be sent from the island. Materia GmbH, a subsidiary of the company, received the shipment and is distributing the products to German pharmacies, according to the report.
«We are proud to be a company that is breaking new ground for the Maltese and European cannabis industry,» said Nick Pateras, CEO of Materia in Europe.
«Our products are already helping patients in Malta improve their quality of life, and now we can meet the needs of patients in Germany as well. We believe that Malta will play an important role in the global cannabis supply chain, just as it has done in the broader pharmaceutical sector for decades. We are proud to be the company breaking new ground for the cannabis industry in Malta and across Europe.»
Malta legalized medical cannabis in 2018 and the government has issued five production licenses so far, with more licenses expected in the coming months.
In addition, Malta Enterprises—the country’s economic development agency, which helps medical cannabis companies set up operations locally—assist them in establishing their businesses, purchasing equipment, transferring machinery, human resources, R&D, and more—is highly focused on R&D regarding cannabinoid-based therapeutics and industrial processes for cannabis extraction and cultivation.
«We have worked tirelessly »to achieve this result,« said Malta Enterprise CEO Kurt Farrugia. »From now on, we will be taking even greater strides in the field of medical cannabis.”.
Malta legalized cannabis for adult use last year, becoming the first country in the European Union to do so. The law allows citizens aged 18 or older to possess up to seven grams of cannabis, grow four plants at home, and keep up to 50 grams of their harvest at home.
