Materia receives cannabis production license for its Malta site
Materia Malta, a Canadian medical cannabis and CBD company, has received its license to produce cannabis for medical and research purposes from the Maltese Medicines Authority. With this license, the company can begin producing and exporting medical cannabis to foreign markets such as Germany, after receiving EU-GMP certification last May.
The facility located in Ħal Far has an annual capacity of 6,000 kg, with a potential sales value of 36 million euros based on an average blended selling price across several key European markets.
«We are delighted to be fully licensed and to begin generating revenue from our facility in Malta. I would like to congratulate our entire team for helping to realize our vision of a state-of-the-art processing facility, especially given the challenges posed by the pandemic over the past 18 months,» said Deepak Anand, CEO of Materia.
Malta Enterprise, the Maltese government’s economic development agency, also praised Materia’s work. Malta Enterprise CEO Kurt Farruga said, «We are delighted to see Materia reach this milestone. We have been working closely with Materia from the very beginning, and the caliber of the team exemplifies the kind of company we are proud to support here in Malta. We are confident that Materia will be one of the industry leaders for years to come.»
Materia Malta has already begun the process of importing its first batch of raw materials for commercial production and will begin fulfilling its supply commitments very soon, starting with its initial target markets of Germany, Malta, and the United Kingdom. The first product has already been successfully registered under Materia Deutschland GmbH’s narcotics license prior to its import into Germany.
«As pleased as we are to have obtained our license, we are immediately beginning to implement the next phase of our plan,» said Nick Pateras, Managing Director, Europe, at Materia. «We now have a fully established and authorized pathway to the European market for cultivation partners around the world. This includes our in-house processing expertise in Malta, as well as our distribution capabilities in Germany—Europe’s largest market—through Materia Deutschland.»
