Massachusetts: first «recreational» cultivation license granted
The Massachusetts State Cannabis Control Commission yesterday granted the first license of the future recreational cannabis market to a grower.
The license was awarded to Sira Naturals, which has already been producing medical cannabis since 2016, and will allow it to grow between 1000 and 2000m² of cannabis indoors, process it and supply it to retail establishments, but not directly to consumers.
«While this is a significant passage, I want to say that it's only the beginning, not the end,» said Steven Hoffman, Chairman of the Commission.
Sira Naturals is the first of 53 cannabis companies to have applied for a license. Authorities must now review the remaining applications in anticipation of the opening of legal cannabis sales on July 1.
Sira Naturals currently includes a cultivation site, a cannabis processing site and three medical cannabis dispensaries.
«We are very pleased and will work very, very hard to continue our tradition of providing premium cannabis grown and sold with integrity,» explained Michael Dundas, CEO of Sira Naturals.
The company is expected to apply for a sales license and hopes to have it for 2019.
