Lebanon will no longer prosecute the simple use of cannabis
A Lebanese judge issued a ruling which is legally binding and instructs prosecutors to no longer prosecute cases involving drug use. The decision applies to cannabis as well as all other drugs.
Technically, the judge’s decision was not strictly necessary. Lebanese law already requires that individuals arrested for drug use be referred to a «Drug Abuse Committee,» which would determine how to help them rather than prosecute them.
However, only 3% of the court cases involving simple drug use had been referred to the Committee since the law took effect. The judge’s ruling essentially means that prosecutors will now have to begin complying with the law.
Lebanon could become A New Portugal and completely decriminalize drug use in the future.
