Hemp oil has the same effect on the brain as meditation
A study A study conducted by a group of Italian scientists reveals that diffusing hemp essential oil provides the same relaxing effects as meditation or yoga. The research also indicates that the psychological and physical effects of this oil go beyond its THC or CBD content alone.
«It’s not just THC or CBD that gives cannabis or hemp its effects,» explains Brad Douglass, director of a cannabis testing company. «Cannabis products are mostly purchased for their THC content. Studies like this one help everyone understand that it’s more nuanced than that.»
Scientists exposed volunteers to almond essential oil on one side and hemp essential oil on the other, with the cannabinoids (THC and CBD) removed so that only the terpenes, mainly myrcene and beta-caryophyllene. They then measured brain waves, heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, and respiratory rate.
The study showed that participants were more relaxed and less anxious when they inhaled hemp essential oil. The changes in brain waves were similar to those observed in people who meditate. A reduction in pain was also observed.
Although the study is interesting and promising, it was limited to just five participants between the ages of 30 and 57. Further research would be needed to explore the topic in greater depth and determine which terpene combinations what effects they have.
«We’ve only scratched the surface,» Douglass said. «We’ve added a few pieces to the foundation to show that these effects are real.»
More generally, it was already known that the The terpene composition of a variety influenced its effects. Future research may show that terpenes are more important than cannabinoids.
