Emerald Cup 2018 winners
The Emerald Cup, renamed by some the Oscars of Cannabis, took place this weekend in Santa Rosa, California. The famous competition is known for bringing together the best outdoor-grown, pesticide-free weed. It rewards the region's best growers and cannabis artisans, and has forged an international reputation for itself.
But it's also a fair and a festival, with fashion, music, food and stalls offering a unique opportunity for industry players to meet and exchange ideas. It attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world in a spirit of community and sharing, and around values such as sustainability and respect for nature (and the love of cannabis).
A brief history of the Emerald Cup
The Emerald Cup was originally held in Mendocino County in the heart of the Emerald Triangle, a region known for its high-quality cannabis cultivation in Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity counties. Connoisseurs are bound to have heard of Emerald Triangle where some of the best weed in the world is reputed to grow. This expertise is about to be recognized with the establishment of’a system of appellations of origin for Californian weed, like wine, which recognizes and guarantees the quality of cannabis.
The Emerald Cup began in 2003 as a secret festival between growers to celebrate the harvest. Today, the festival is one of the largest cannabic events in the world, but it has managed to preserve the spirit of its beginnings: «The Emerald Cup is still about growers. growers coming out of their mountains seed makers coming out of their mountains, processors coming out of their mountains, and now we've got all these people coming to meet us,» enthuses Swami Chaitanya, judge and famous Mendocino County farmer.
A strong sense of community unites festival participants, who have an almost religious love of the plant. Founder and organizer Tim Blake asked for a moment of silence to reflect on what cannabis brings and to express his gratitude.
The festival also featured Willie Nelson, country music legend and fervent cannabis campaigner, who thanked attendees for their «ongoing commitment to the sacred plant». Tim Blake also recalled and honored all those who have been or are «unjustly criminalized and incarcerated» for cannabis-related offenses.
