Medical cannabis cultivation authorized in Jersey in early 2020?
During a recent appearance at Cannabis Europa Toronto, Lyndon Farnham, Jersey's Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, opened the floodgates to the cultivation of cannabis. medical marijuana on the island. In particular, the latter sold the island's ability to strictly regulate industries such as banking, and its long tradition of agriculture.
«The Jersey government intends to be at the forefront of the emerging cannabis market in Europe,» he declared. «And I can assure you that our government will help build a responsible, well-regulated, reliable and efficient industry, as it has already done in banking and financial services around the world.»
He added: «We know that it's up to governments and businesses to work together to promote the fact that a well-regulated medical cannabis industry - and the key here is «well-regulated» - can absolutely be the catalyst for the greatest wellness and health opportunity in a generation. Jersey is perfectly placed to be part of a new industry based on drug distribution, scientific innovation, high-value agriculture, intellectual property creation and global regulation. We have the experience, the infrastructure and, of course, the entrepreneurial spirit.»
The senator went on to say that investor interest had been growing since Jersey issued its first licenses of CBD cannabis cultivation, to make CBD oil from hemp flowers, at the beginning of the year.
«To date, we have companies growing hemp to use the uncontrolled parts of the plant for seed and fiber. We have companies authorized to grow hemp and use the flowers for the’CBD extraction. Many local companies have sought licenses to grow cannabis rich in THC for medical use. I can say that we intend to issue the first licenses for high-THC cannabis in early 2020.»
