Colorado authorizes home delivery of cannabis
He is the the first American state to legalize cannabis. But he was not the first to authorize home delivery. It's now a done deal. A dispensary in Aurora, a suburb of Denver, has just obtained the very first license, issued by the Marijuana Enforcment, Colorado's regulatory authority.
«You can have medicine delivered. You can have your groceries delivered. Even your booze. It's 2021. Even if there were no covid-19 pandemic, it makes sense to deliver.», appreciates Truman Bradley of the Marijuana Industry Group, the union of marijuana sellers. Colorado cannabis.
The store, Colorado Harvest Company, enjoys an absolute monopoly. For the time being, it is the only dispensary in the state to offer delivery. He hopes to have delivery drivers on the road by March 1. And to celebrate, the store owner announces that a special guest will be unveiled soon. But for now, he's keeping his name under wraps.
Until today, Colorado allowed home delivery for six medical cannabis businesses. A decision greatly linked to the covid-19 pandemic, which pushes frail people to remain confined to their homes. Since January 1, 2021, cannabis delivery has also been permitted for recreational cannabis enthusiasts.
Drastic conditions
The conditions for obtaining this delivery license are drastic. In Aurora, Colorado's third-largest city, priority is given to people who have been affected by the «war on drugs» (mainly blacks), who earn less than 50 % of Colorado's median income, and who live in a «low economic opportunity zone». All in the name of social justice.
Also in Aurora, currently the only town in Colorado to allow delivery, people wishing to receive a delivery of weed will have to limit themselves. It will only be possible between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., for 28 grams of flowers, 8 grams of concentrate or 800mg of THC in food. Obviously, delivery is only authorized to the home, not to the workplace, for example. Only people over 21 are concerned, and they must prove their age with ID.
The city of Denver, Colorado's capital, is also preparing to authorize cannabis delivery. «We will put up solid barriers, if the delivery is approved by the city council., says Eric Escudero of Denver's Licensing Department. This includes ID scanners, to make sure that young people with false papers aren't buying cannabis.»
