Chile's first cannabis-based medicine goes on sale
Cannabiol, the first cannabis-based medicine developed in Chile, has been put up for sale This week in a municipal pharmacy north of Santiago. It is designed to treat chronic pain resulting from neurological diseases or cancer.
Chile legalized medical cannabis in 2015, and was content until now to import its medical cannabis. In 2016, Sativex was also approved for sale.
Cannabiol was developed by a Chilean laboratory specializing in phytotherapy, Knop Laboratories, after obtaining a special permit from the Institut de Santé Publique (ISP) to distribute the drug.
The cannabis used in the production of this medicine comes from the 6,900 plants of the «Tierra Santa» plantation, in the town of Quinamávida (about 350 km south of Santiago), which belong to the Fundación Daya, which advocates the medical use of cannabis.
The Foundation has partnered with 15 municipalities to distribute the drug. Approximately 2,500 people in these towns will have access to Cannabiol, and a further 200 people have registered for PSI authorization.
Presented in oily form, it sells for 75$ per 30 mL.
In Chile, although private consumption is authorized, the sale of cannabis is still punishable. The Chilean Congress is currently debating a bill to regulate the consumption and self-cultivation of cannabis.
