Japan: cannabis use among young people on the rise
Japan is not the most lenient country when it comes to cannabis users, despite the fact that its long history with this plant. Yet the number of teenagers involved in cannabis-related cases increased more than fivefold between 2013 and 2017, according to the Japanese police agency.
A total of 297 people aged between 14 and 19 were the subject of a cannabis-related police intervention in 2017, up on the previous year.
«Nowadays, cannabis is easily available online, and it's possible that young people are using it simply to satisfy their curiosity,» said an agency official.
Of 275 people, 155 were employed, 67 were unemployed and 53 were high school students, a three- to five-fold increase since 2013.
In terms of crime in general, the number of minors subject to police intervention in 2017 fell to 4,719, the lowest figure since the post-war period.
