Moonrocks
Moon rocks are nuggets of cannabis flower soaked in extracts and rolled in kief. Moon rocks generally have a high THC content, averaging over 50 %, and are prized above all for their potency. Moon rocks are also frequently referred to as «cannabis caviar», although this title is technically reserved for heads soaked in extracts but without the layer of kief added.
Not only do moon rocks resemble a lunar landscape, they also owe their name to the high you're likely to get from smoking a concoction of weed soaked in concentrated grass and rolled in even more concentrated grass.
Although moonrocks are a relatively new cannabis product, there are already a multitude of variants on the market, including THC-free and CBD-rich hemp strains. Cannabis brands continue to create their own moonrocks variants with various cultivars and concentrates. Some pre-rolls on the market mimic the moonrock experience by dousing the finished pre-roll in concentrate and rolling it in kief. These products essentially let you smoke moonrocks without having to deal with a sticky mess.
A brief history of moonrocks
Moon rocks were born out of the intimate, long-standing relationship between cannabis culture and hip-hop. To be more precise, they are the product of a mixtape project between former Death Row Records executive vice-president turned marijuana mogul Kurupt (Ricardo E. Brown) and musical artist Dr Zodiak (Daniel Laughlin).
Kurupt and Dr. Zodiak met in 2013 and quickly went from collaborating on a mixtape to launching the first line of branded marijuana moonrocks. Since the advent of Kurupt and Dr. Zodiak's Moonrocks, other brands and dispensaries have pierced the stratosphere and launched their own moonrocks concoctions. Many moonrocks were originally made with the GSC cultivar (formerly Girl Scout Cookies), but today many varieties are used, including hemp varieties.
How powerful are moonrocks?
You might expect moon rocks to contain a high percentage of marijuana's most desirable compound, THC, and you'd be right. Because these cannabis products combine flower and two concentrates, most moon rocks contain more than 50 % of THC. Potency varies greatly from product to product, as flower, concentrate and kief all have their own potency. Add to this the fact that moonrocks are usually coated with more than one layer of concentrate, and you have a very potent product. Because of its high potency, don't offer a bowl of moonrocks to a novice smoker. CBD moonrock varieties will also be rich in CBD.
Conclusion: Check the label for a breakdown of wattage and make sure you buy legal moonrocks to be sure these figures are accurate.
How much should I expect to pay for moonrocks?
As you may have guessed, moonrocks are generally a little more expensive per gram or per eighth (3.5 grams) than your average premium flower. It depends on the quality of the flower, the concentrate and the kief, but all things being equal, expect moonrocks to cost more than an equal amount of bud. But don't forget that they contain three ingredients and are much more potent than flower alone.
How to smoke moonrocks
Smoking moonrocks isn't necessarily complicated, but it does require a little more effort than smoking flowers.
Do :
- Use scissors to break moonrocks into small pieces
- Use glass smoking accessories instead of rolling papers
- Lightly squeeze a bowl of moonrocks into a pipe or piece of water to ensure that as little kief as possible is lost.
- Use a hemp wick to light your moonrocks
What not to do :
- Try rolling them into a joint or a blunt
- Put moonrocks in your grinder
- Packing the sound bowl too tight bong
Similarly, grilling moonrocks will completely foul your grinder and probably remove most of the moonrock's kief layer. The dense texture also makes it necessary to keep a flame on your bowl longer than you would with dry flower. Using a hemp wick will save you from inhaling all the butane from a lighter.
How to make moonrocks at home
If you decide to start making moon rocks at home, you'll need the following items:
- A piece of flower
- Extract or concentrate
- Kief, commercially available or from your grinder
- Pliers or tweezers for separating sticky ingredients
- A liquid dropper (optional)
Once you have all the necessary tools and ingredients, follow these steps:
Apply the extract to the entire nug. You may be able to roll your nug in cannabis oil, depending on its consistency. Some extracts may need to be heated to reach a consistency that will adhere better to the flower. If the extract is fairly liquid, you can use a dropper to place it on and in the nug.
Let the first layer seep into the nug and repeat the first step. Some canna artisans also inject hot oil into the center of the buds.
Once the extract has been deposited and set, roll the extract-covered flower in the kief. Use tweezers if necessary. The kief should adhere easily to the oil-covered piece.
Set the kief and concentrate-covered piece aside to dry in a cool place, away from direct light or sunlight.
Enjoy your homemade moonrocks!
