Rolling sheets: materials, sizes and how to choose
The rolling papers (or rolling papers) are very thin sheets of paper used to wrap cannabis when rolling a joint. They are one of the most basic and versatile accessories for cannabis use, available in a variety of materials, sizes, and styles that directly influence the smoking experience.
Materials used for rolling papers
The choice of material is the most important factor; it determines the burn rate, the taste, and the amount of chemicals inhaled.
Rice paper : the thinnest rolling paper available to the general public. It burns very slowly, produces little unwanted smoke, and has virtually no effect on the cannabis’s flavor. Ideal for connoisseurs who want to experience the terpenes depending on the type. Downside: harder for beginners to handle, tears easily when wet.
Hemp paper : made from fibers of hemp, It is slightly thicker than rice paper, easier to roll, and burns a little faster. It is very popular among consumers who appreciate the idea of a joint made entirely from cannabis. It has a neutral taste and burns evenly.
Linen paper : durable, burns slowly, neutral taste. Less common than rice or hemp but favored by some experienced riders.
Wood pulp paper : The most common and least expensive (like classic white Rizla). Thicker, burns faster, with a slightly noticeable papery taste. Often chemically bleached. Acceptable for occasional use.
Cellulose (transparent) : transparent sheets made from plant-based cellulose. Tasteless, smokeless, and burn very slowly. Spectacular visual effect, but require careful handling.
| Material | Thickness | Combustion | Taste | Ease of handling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rice | Very thin | Slow | Neutral | Difficult |
| Hemp | Fine to medium | Average | Neutral | Easy |
| Flax | Fine | Slow | Neutral | Average |
| Wood pulp | Average | Fast | Slight taste of paper | Very easy |
| Cellulose | Fine | Very slow | No | Difficult |
Rolling paper sizes
The format determines the size of the seal and the amount of cannabis used.
Regular (70 mm) : the classic standard size. Suitable for a solo joint of about 0.3 to 0.5 g. Compact size, ideal for experienced smokers.
Slim (78 mm) : Slightly longer than the regular version, same width. Allows for a slightly fuller seal while remaining discreet.
King Size (108–110 mm) : The most popular size, perfect for rolling generous tapered joints containing 0.5 to 1 g. Recommended for group sessions.
King Slim (108–110 mm, slim size) : Same length as the King Size but narrower—for smokers who have mastered the art of rolling and prefer a minimal paper-to-weed ratio. A favorite among connoisseurs.
Double-wide : wider than the standard version of the same length. Not very popular because it has a high paper-to-herb ratio, which affects the flavor.
Special formats
Pre-formed cones : Pre-rolled cone-shaped papers with a built-in filter, ready to be filled and sealed. Completely eliminates the rolling step. Very convenient for beginners or for quickly preparing multiple joints. Available in regular and king-size sizes and in various materials.
Flavored leaves : Some leaves are flavored (strawberry, vanilla, mint, blueberry, etc.) to alter the taste experience. Choose based on personal preference, but avoid them if you want to fully appreciate the aromatic profile of your cannabis strain.
Tobacco leaves (blunt wraps) : Technically distinct from traditional rolling papers, they are used to roll blunts. They are thicker, contain nicotine, and burn slowly.
How is rolling paper made?
Unlike writing paper made from wood, most rolling papers are produced from non-wood plant fibers (rice, hemp, flax, sisal) that burn more slowly and produce fewer harmful substances when burned. The fibers are extracted, pressed into very thin sheets, and treated according to the final product. Most standard papers contain additives—calcium carbonate, dyes, potassium nitrate (to regulate combustion)—which «all-natural» papers avoid.
Which sheet should I choose?
For beginners : hemp or wood pulp in king size — easy to handle, durable.
For preserve the flavors : Slim or King Slim rolling papers — slow burn, neutral taste, minimal paper-to-herb ratio.
For particity : pre-rolled hemp cones, no rolling required, consistent results.
For avoid additives : Look for the words «unbleached,» «chlorine-free,» or «100% natural» on the packaging.
