What is a dab rig nail?
The nail, literally «nail» in English, is the centerpiece of any dab rig The heated surface on which cannabis concentrates are applied for vaporization. Sometimes called spike or, in its modern version, banger, It is heated to a high temperature by a torch or electric resistance (e-nail), then the concentrate is added using a dabber to initiate vaporization. This process is called dabbing.
What is a dab rig nail?
The nail is the equivalent of the bowl on a water pipe, but for concentrates: it replaces combustion with vaporization. Unlike cannabis flower, which burns at around 230°C, concentrates such as shatter, wax, rosin or Piattella are best vaporized between 300°C and 450°C, depending on the type of extraction and the desired effect.
The nail is screwed or inserted into the joint of the dab rig (usually 10mm, 14mm or 18mm, male or female). There are two main configurations: nails with a dome, where steam is trapped under a glass cap placed over the nail, and nails without a dome, now widely dominant, which allow freer air circulation and are used with a carb cap.
Nail vs banger: what's the difference?
The terms nail and banger are often confused, but they refer to distinct forms.
The traditional nail has a vertical cylindrical shape, similar to a nail, with a flat or slightly concave surface on top. This is the original shape, popularized in the early 2010s with the first dab rigs. It's more compact but offers a smaller heating surface.
The banger is an evolution of the nail: it adopts a bucket shape, suspended perpendicular to the rig joint. This shape offers several advantages: a larger heating surface, better heat retention, and more even vaporization of the concentrate. Today, the quartz banger has become the de facto standard in the dabbing community, to the extent that the terms nail and banger are often used interchangeably.
Materials: quartz, titanium, ceramic
The choice of nail material has a direct impact on aroma, durability and ease of use.
Quartz the current reference material. Chemically inert at high temperatures, it gives off no off-flavours and preserves the full terpene profile of concentrates. It heats up quickly (20 to 45 seconds with a torch), but cools down just as quickly, requiring precision timing. Slightly fragile to repeated thermal shocks, a quality quartz banger nevertheless lasts from several months to several years with proper maintenance. It is the essential choice for top-of-the-range extractions such as live hash rosin or Piattella.
Titanium Titanium: the strongest, most impact-resistant material. Grade 2 titanium (food-grade) is the only grade that does not alter the taste of concentrates; lower grades can give off unpleasant metallic aromas. Titanium heats up more slowly than quartz, but retains heat longer, which can be an advantage for longer sessions. Less popular today since the popularization of quartz, it remains appreciated for its solidity.
Ceramics Good taste neutrality and excellent heat retention. Ceramic rises slowly in temperature and stays hot longer, which favors low-temperature dabs. However, it is very fragile to mechanical shocks and sudden cooling (never use cold water on hot ceramic). Less common, it is appreciated by a niche of connoisseurs.
Glass Standard glass: least recommended for intensive use. Standard glass cannot withstand repeated high-temperature heating cycles and cracks quickly. Reserve for entry-level rigs or very occasional use.
Nail with dome vs nail without dome
Nail with dome This is an old-fashioned configuration in which a glass cap (the dome) is placed over the nail after the concentrate has been deposited, to trap the steam. Bulky and impractical to handle with just one hand, this system has been largely abandoned in favor of dome-less nails.
Domeless nail now the norm. The domeless nail or banger has a central hole or open geometry that allows air to circulate without a cap. Instead, we use a carb cap, a cap that is placed over the banger opening after the concentrate has been deposited, to create a low-pressure chamber that promotes complete vaporization at lower temperatures. Today, the carb cap is an essential accessory for dome-less nails.
E-nail: the electronic nail
The e-nail (electronic nail) is an alternative to the gas torch: an electric heating element, connected to a digital control unit, wraps around the nail or banger to keep it at a precise, constant temperature.
The advantages are significant: temperature adjustable down to the degree, continuous heating with no need to wait or watch, and no risk of flame-related accidents. On the other hand, the cost of entry is higher (€60 to €300 depending on the model) and the device is not very portable. The e-nail is particularly appreciated by regular users who want to optimize their low temp dab sessions with maximum precision.
Temperatures: which setting for which effect?
The temperature of the nail is the most decisive parameter for the quality of a dabbing session.
| Temperature | Profile | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| 300-380°C | Low temp dab: intense aromas, light steam, low residue | Premium extractions (rosin, Piattella, live resin) |
| 380-450°C | Mid temp: good balance of aroma and steam density | General purpose, all types of concentrates |
| 450-600°C | High temp dab: dense steam, degraded aromas, residues | Lower quality concentrates, desired effect |
| +600°C | Partial combustion, burnt taste, charred residues | Avoid |
For torch-heated nails without an e-nail, the most common method is to heat to red (or until the quartz is opaque with heat), then wait between 30 and 60 seconds before dabbing, depending on banger thickness and ambient temperature.
How do I maintain a nail?
A nail clogged with carbonized residue (chazzing) permanently alters the taste and thermal performance of quartz. Regular maintenance is therefore essential.
Hot cleaning (after each session): wipe the inside of the still-warm banger with a cotton bud soaked in 90°+ isopropyl alcohol. This habit alone is enough to keep your nails clean indefinitely.
Cold cleaning (for hardened residues): soak the nail in isopropyl alcohol for 30 minutes, then rinse with hot water. For very encrusted deposits, a quick pass with a torch to burn off the residue, followed by immediate wiping, is effective. chazzing quartz.
Chazzing when quartz takes on a permanent milky hue and a rough surface after too much high-temperature heating or insufficient cleaning, it is said to be chazzé. A chazzed banger cannot be restored to its original transparency and must be replaced.
Which nail to choose?
To get started, a 14mm quartz banger (the most common diameter) is the best entry point: versatile, a good price/quality compromise (€10 to €40), neutral on aromas and compatible with the vast majority of dab rigs. For regular, tasting-oriented use, a thick-bottomed quartz banger (thick bottom banger) offers better heat retention and greater tolerance to timing variations. For intensive or group sessions, the e-nail is an investment that quickly pays for itself.
