An Australian medical cannabis company has just sold its first cannabis-based tablets

Australian medical cannabis company MMJ Phytotech has just sold its first cannabis-based tablets. The bad news for Australia: they're only available in Europe.

The capsules were sold via a Swiss subsidiary, Satipharm: the 10mg medicine is sold for €89. The tablets have been registered as a dietary supplement in Germany. Its active ingredient CBD, is made from a specific variety of cannabis and contains no THC, the chemical active ingredient that causes most of the psychoactive effects of cannabis when smoked.

Scientific research has shown that CBD can help patients suffering from cancer, anxiety or’epilepsy, said the company in a press release.

The tablets contain no traces of herbicides or pesticides. The manufacturing process uses a «Farm to Pharma» approach to medical cannabis, enabling greater traceability of production, from seed to medicine.

«August was a month of firsts for the company. Our first clinical study was approved, the first CBD capsules were available on our new online sales platform and the first revenues were generated,» says Andreas Gedeon, Managing Director of MMJ Phtytotech. «These achievements represent progress made in the implementation of our Farm to Pharma strategy, which will certainly reverberate throughout the medical cannabis value chain.»

While the medical marijuana remains largely illegal in Australia, An Australian study carried out last May reported that 67% of Australians would agree that patients should use a form of cannabis to treat chronic pain and certain illnesses.

MMJ Phytotech isn't the only Australian company working with cannabis. AusCann, a cannabis producer, was granted a license earlier this year to produce medical marijuana on Norfolk Island and is exporting it to Canada.
