California: first Cannabis Café to open in September 2019
It's official: The First Cannabis Café in the United States will open its doors on September 1, 2019. It will be located at 1201 N. La Brea Ave. in West Hollywood. Lowell Herb received final approval at the West Hollywood Business License Commission meeting on Tuesday, July 16.
The restaurant will be authorized to prepare its dishes with cannabis and will also allow its customers to smoke and dab while they eat. For Andrea Drummer, the café’s head chef, being the first restaurant to serve cannabis-infused foods is a responsibility she does not take lightly. «We’re thrilled to lead by example,» she said. The café’s menu was developed by Drummer and will feature cannabidiol (CBD), THC-infused foods, and vegetarian dishes.
Andréa Drummer is no stranger to the world of cannabis, having written the book *Cooking with Cannabis: The Art of Cooking with Marijuana* and worked as a chef for rapper Wiz Khalifa, Miguel, and Chelsea Handler. She has also appeared in the Netflix shows «Cooking on High» and «Chelsea On.».
«This is a historic moment, not only for cannabis, but for the country as a whole,» she says. «As pioneers in ending cannabis prohibition, we are committed to treating cannabis the same way we treat alcohol. The first step was to make it available for sale. Now it’s about giving the public access to a safe, communal space where cannabis can be consumed without stigma.».
This restaurant isn't the first place where people can use cannabis. The state of Alaska has, in particular, authorized the opening of cannabis lounges last March. However, they are not permitted to sell food along with cannabis.
