Uruguay to export cannabis oil
Uruguay's first shipments of cannabis oil will be ready for export as early as the month of December, currently bound for Canada and Mexico.
Uruguayan cannabis oil will be produced by the’International Cannabis Corporation (ICC), which aims to be the largest legal cannabis producer in South America. Its CEO, Alejandro Antalich, has also stated that his Uruguayan company is open to selling the oil on the domestic market.
«The goal is to export it. But if the Ministry of Public Health believes it can be sold on the local market, the plan would be to do so.».
Uruguay was the the first country to legalize cannabis in the world, in 2013. Exporting a cannabis-based medical product will also be a first for this South American nation.
In November, the ICC is expected to begin construction of a new cannabis laboratory dedicated to the production of’cannabis oil, near Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Until the laboratory is ready to begin operations, cannabis oil intended for export will be produced in a temporary lab.
The ICC currently cultivates medical cannabis on more than 230 hectares of land and plans to invest more than 10 million $ in cannabis processing in 2018. It also grows and sells cannabis for the Uruguayan market, intended for adult use.
