United Kingdom: second reading of the proposed legalization of medical cannabis this week
The Bill to legalize medical cannabis in the United Kingdom continues its legislative journey this week, and will pass its second reading in Parliament next Friday.
The only obstacle to further progress is that, without the official support of Prime Minister Theresa May and her ministers, few bills make it through the legislative process.
This is a «barbaric position», declared Paul Flynn, the Labour MP behind the bill in a Facebook video.
The medical benefits of cannabis
Many of you this week will have seen images of the cruel suffering of 6-year-old Alfie Dingley.
ADVERTISINGBy acknowledging the medical benefits of cannabis we can change an unjust law, helping Alfie and the thousands of patients who are enduring the torments of MS and other serious illnesses.

It also recalls the plight of Alfie Dingley, a 6-year-old epileptic child who was recently refusing the right to treat oneself with cannabis in the UK, whereas this treatment has proved beneficial abroad.
«Cannabis is a useful medicine, the oldest medicine in the world. And there is no reason to refuse its use.»
Ironically, cannabis was historically added to the Western pharmacopoeia by an Irish doctor, William O'Shaughnessy, who studied the medical applications of cannabis during his time with the British East India Company, and published the first medical literature on the therapeutic use of cannabis on his return.
If the second reading of the bill goes off without a hitch, it will still have to receive the assent of both chambers, followed by royal assent before becoming law.
