Amnesia is one of Europe's most famous cannabis strains, born in the coffeeshops of Amsterdam and popularized worldwide thanks to its powerful effects and unique aromatic profile. With a THC level of up to 22 %, it is a predominantly sativa strain not recommended for novice consumers. It has won more than 18 prizes in the major international Cannabis Cups.
Where does Amnesia come from?
The story of Amnesia begins in the Netherlands, in the 1990s. Legend has it that the Dutch breeder Zwiep, associated with the Hy-Pro nutrient brand, found a seed in a bag of Super Silver Haze bought at The Greenhouse coffeeshop in Amsterdam. From this seed was born the first Amnesia plant, also called Amnesia Hy-Pro or Original Amnesia.
For years, the variety was circulated only as a clone, which contributed to its mythical reputation. Its exact genetics have never been officially divulged, but analyses and breeders' testimonials point to a cross between Thai, Afghan woman and Hawaiian, with a marked sativa predominance.
Zwiep then joined forces with Dinafem to market the first feminized seeds under the name Original Amnesia. Today, these seeds are distributed by Silent Seeds.
⚠️ Not to be confused with’Amnesia Haze is a distinct variety, the result of a different cross. It shares some characteristics, but it's not the same genetics.

Is Amnesia a sativa or an indica?
Amnesia is a dominant sativa, with an estimated proportion of around 80 % sativa / 20 % indica. This sativa dominance translates into :
- A significant vertical growth (up to 180 cm indoors)
- A longer flowering than indicas (75 to 85 days)
- From cerebral and stimulating effects rather than corporal and sedative
It's this sativa genetics that gives it its characteristic effects profile: euphoria, creativity, energy, far from the typical «couch-lock» of indicas.
What are the effects of Amnesia?
The effects of Amnesia are both intense and progressive. They generally begin with a marked cerebral surge, accompanied by a sensation of’euphoria and mental energy. Creativity is often cited as the main effect by regular consumers.

- Euphoria and good humor
- Increased creativity and concentration
- Energy and motivation
- Slight body relaxation at the end of the effect
Possible side effects:
- Paranoia (especially in high doses)
- Dizziness

- Short-term memory loss, hence the name of the variety
With a THC of up to 22 %, Amnesia is a powerful strain. New users are strongly advised to start with a low dose.
For what uses is Amnesia recommended?

- The mood disorders and mild depression (uplift sativa effect)
- L’chronic anxiety and stress (in moderate doses)
- The fatigue and lack of motivation
- L’stress-related insomnia (late evening, effects of the descent)
However, it is not recommended in cases of’history of anxiety disorder or paranoia, because of its high THC content and intense cerebral stimulation.
Amnesia terpenes and aromas
Amnesia has a complex aromatic profile, dominated by three main terpenes:
- Myrcene brings earthy, slightly fruity notes; contributes to body relaxation
- Terpinolene responsible for floral, herbaceous and slightly lemony aromas
- Ocimene : gives a soft, sweet touch, with woody nuances
On the nose and palate, Amnesia develops a distinctive profile. lemony, earthy, with citrus notes and a light touch of musk. This is one of the reasons for its popularity in Amsterdam coffeeshops, where it is often sold as a premium product.
