Luxembourg legalizes medical cannabis
Yesterday, the Luxembourg Parliament voted unanimously to legalize cannabis for medical use.
The law 7253 The purpose of the vote was to allow any doctor with specific training to prescribe medical cannabis for patients suffering from cancer, multiple sclerosis or chronic pain. The cannabis will be sold as dried flowers, oil or medicine, and will be supplied by the Canadian Cannabis Agency. Only four pharmacies will be distributing cannabis in the Grand Duchy for the time being.
The Luxembourg Ministry of Health will evaluate the medical cannabis program after 2 years, and may then extend the prescription to more conditions, such as HIV.
This does not mean that cannabis will be decriminalized in the country. Possessing, transporting or consuming cannabis will still be illegal. Early 2018, 56% of the Luxembourg population in favor of legalizing cannabis.
The Luxembourg health agency has put a brochure on line outlining the general framework and practical details of this pilot phase for making medicinal cannabis available.
