Luxembourg: 56% of the population is in favor of legalizing cannabis
While Luxembourg announced at the end of last year the forthcoming legalization of the medical use of cannabis, the people of Luxembourg are already ready to go further.
During a TNS Ilres survey published at the end of March, 56% of those surveyed declared themselves in favor of legalizing cannabis, and 41% against. Among the 56%, 18% unconditionally support cannabis legalization, and 38% conditionally.
The 18-24 age group is most in favor of this measure, while the 65+ age group is more representative of those against it.
The poll comes as the next parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 2018. Cannabis legalization is not currently on the agenda in the country, but the vast majority of parties are in favor of, at the very least, decriminalization.
The Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) proposes decriminalizing soft drugs.
Les Verts de chez Déi Gréng are more liberal, and have already declared themselves in favor of legalizing cannabis for adults only, accompanied by a policy of prevention and information.
Luxembourg's Parti Démocratique (DP) is also in favor of controlled legalization of cannabis, with state control guaranteeing product quality and the safety of consumers, who would not be forced to make contact with the criminal underworld to obtain their cannabis supplies.
The left-wing party Déi Lénk is also leaning towards decriminalization, as consumers should not be treated as criminals.
For the conservative, populist Reformist Democratic Alternative Party (ADR), only medically supervised drug use should be permitted for drug addicts.
As for the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), its position is unclear, but it would not go in the direction of legalization.
