Legal weed for 75 million Americans
On November 8, Americans will have to choose between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. In addition, the citizens of five states will also vote for recreational legalization of cannabis. If Arizona, California, Maine and Massachusetts vote for this bill, 75 million citizens will have access to quality cannabis. If rap couldn't separate West Coast, East Coast and Dirty South, weed could. If the «yes» votes pass, a tourist will be able to take a road trip up and down the West Coast without ever running out of gear.
In the East, only two states will attempt full legalization. Boston, Massachusetts, could become the largest state to legalize cannabis on the Atlantic seaboard (cannabis is already legal in Washington DC).
Local democracy in the spotlight
Americans may be the target of many clichés on our part, but they have a strong local democracy that applies to the perimeter of cities and counties. If the «yes» vote passes in a state, citizens will be called to the polls a second time. They will then vote to accept, or not, the presence of pot dispensaries in their county or city. In Colorado, 153 of 215 cities of the state have rejected the presence of recreational cannabis dispensaries. Some have opted for medical marijuana dispensaries only.
Another example of effective local democracy is in Oregon, where cannabis has been fully legal since July 2015. Authorities are calling on citizens to vote, again on November 8, on whether or not to increase the cannabis tax index. Democracy can be retroactive. Faced with an explosion in the number of dispensaries, a second question could erase the first. A city's residents will be able to decide whether or not to expel dispensaries.
