Free medical cannabis in Sicily
Medical cannabis now available free of charge in Sicily, after signature at the end of January by Sicilian Health Minister Ruggero Razza.
The cost of prescription cannabis for patients suffering from very specific pathologies (chronic pain, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis) will be covered by the Sicilian regional government.
The use of cannabis for medical purposes has been legal in Italy since 2013, with the cannabis generally paid for by the patient. Cannabis is dispensed as a medicine by authorized pharmacies, which obtain their supplies from or to the Italian army or by imports from authorized producers.
In 2019, Aurora Cannabis wins a call for tenders to supply medical cannabis to Italy, in limited quantities, as it must provide the country with a minimum of 400 kg over a two-year contract.
Self-cultivation remains illegal and punishable by prison. In practice, however, it is widely accepted, especially in southern Italy, and particularly when used for medical purposes. Last December, the Italian Supreme Court, for example, cleared a self-grower who produced for his own use.
Possession of cannabis is decriminalized in Italy, but still punishable by a fine and suspension of your driving license.
Last year, the cannabis light has almost been regulated, The bill is a step in this direction having been rejected by the Italian Senate at the last minute.
