Colorado wants to double cannabis possession limits
The Colorado now allows cannabis possession in public to one ounce, or 28 grams. A recent bill, just passed by one of the state Senate committees, would increase the possession limit to two ounces, or 56 grams. It would also erase past convictions for possession and self-cultivation from criminal records.
So far, the bill has passed the House of Representatives and the Senate Judiciary Committee by 45 votes to 19. It still has to pass the Senate before being signed into law.
«It should be reviewed fairly quickly, given that it hasn't given rise to any controversy,» he said. declared Alex Valdez, who initiated the bill. «I think cannabis issues are generally starting to become non-partisan, and we got some of the most conservative people to vote, which is very telling.»
As far as cannabis use is concerned, the HB 21-1090 would not change either the limit of plants allowed to grow at home, set at 12 plants except for patients holding a medical cannabis card, and purchases at dispensaries would still be limited to one ounce per day.
Mr. Valdez's goal is to automate the process of expunging criminal records in Colorado, a task that could be made difficult by Covid's financial impact on the state's economy. Currently, to expunge a criminal record, a request must be made to a judge who will review the charges in committee on a case-by-case basis.
This proposal would only apply to local convictions, as opposed to state convictions. already pardoned by Governor Jared Polis. The governor only pardoned one-ounce convictions, sticking to the legal limit. The new bill would result in new convictions to be erased, as it would pardon anyone who possessed up to two ounces.
