The Plug West
The Plug West coffeeshop is located at Frederik Hendrikstraat 123 in the Frederik Hendrikbuurt district, right in the heart of Amsterdam-West. This is the second address in the The Plug chain, which opened its doors on the premises of the former Hugo de Groot coffeeshop, which had its own regulars in this residential area in the west of the city.
What sets Plug West apart from the rest of the chain is its resolutely local positioning. Here, there are no tourists in search of the most Instagrammable coffeeshop in the center: this is a real neighborhood coffee shop, frequented above all by local Amstellodammers. The atmosphere is unpretentious, the space small, and the clientele loyal.
The shop operates mainly in take-away mode, with limited space for on-site consumption, with a few seats available, and some outdoor seating when the weather permits. The main asset remains the menu: true to The Plug's reputation, the selection of flowers and resins is meticulous, with competitive prices and regular «specials» that are well worth the detour.
The staff are generally helpful and available for advice, a point that often comes up in reviews from regulars. Opening hours are particularly generous: open every day from 7am to 0.45am, Plug West is one of the few places in Amsterdam to open so early in the morning.
The Frederik Hendrikbuurt district is a pleasant place to explore, just a stone's throw from Westerpark and Haarlemmerstraat. The Plug West is a reference address for locals, away from the hustle and bustle of the Centrum.
