Preroll cannabis: definition, composition and how to choose a good preroll

A preroll (or pre-roll, pre-rolled) is a seal of cannabis prepared industrially or artisanally by a producer, brand or dispensary, ready for consumption at the point of purchase. It eliminates the need for grinder and drive yourself, offering an all-in-one experience that's ready for immediate use.

Prerolls are available in a wide range of sizes, varieties and qualities, from basic 0.5 g cones to premium concentrate-infused prerolls weighing several grams.

What's in a preroll?

Not all prerolls are created equal, and composition varies considerably depending on product positioning.

Shake and trim For a long time, and still today in many markets, prerolls have been made from production residues: shake (flower crumbs that have fallen to the bottom of the jars), trim (leaves and small branches trimmed during harvesting), and sometimes ground stems. These ingredients are less expensive and enable us to make the most of by-products that would otherwise go to waste. Quality is generally inferior to that of whole flowers.

Crushed whole flowers Medium to premium prerolls are filled with selected whole flowers, crushed just before packaging. The aromatic profile and cannabinoids are significantly higher.

Infused prerolls Infusion: a premium category where concentrates are added inside or outside the joint to enhance potency and aromatic complexity. Several infusion formats are available.

Standard versus infused prerolls

Standard Preroll Infused Preroll
Contents Crushed flowers or shakes Flowers + concentrate
Typical THC 15–25% 30–50%+

Infusion examples Kief, oil, wax, live resin, sauce
For whom Beginners to regular consumers Experienced consumers

The most common types of infusion on the legal market:

  • Kief : sprinkled on the exterior or integrated into the interior - the most common and the least expensive
  • Wax / budder / crumble : incorporated into the joint mass
  • Live resin / sauce for top-of-the-range prerolls with maximum terpene profile
  • Hash infused (infused hash pre-roll) : hash integrated into the joint, very popular in the Canadian and Californian markets

Preroll, joint, blunt: the differences

The preroll is functionally a seal - the difference lies solely in the manufacturing process (industrial or artisanal vs. hand-rolled by the consumer). A blunt pre-rolled can also be marketed as preroll, but in tobacco leaf rather than paper.

Note on the US vs Europe lexicon in the United States, a seal refers to pure cannabis, a spliff refers to cannabis + tobacco. In Europe, and particularly in France, usage is often reversed or undifferentiated - «joint» is used to designate both. Prerolls sold on legal CBD markets in Europe are almost exclusively tobacco-free.

Prerolls in France and Europe

On the European legal markets, the term preroll is mainly used in the world of CBD Pre-rolled CBD flower joints, sold in specialist stores or online. They allow you to consume CBD in smoked form without having to prepare it yourself.

Quality varies greatly between brands, but the same criteria apply: some are filled with low-quality CBD trim, others with selected flowers with identified terpene profiles. Checking the provenance and certificate of analysis (COA) remains the best guarantee.

How do you assess the quality of a preroll?

It's difficult to evaluate a preroll before opening it, which is one of its disadvantages compared to buying flowers. Here are a few indicators:

Density A well-filled preroll is firm and even along its entire length. A soft preroll or one with hollow areas will burn poorly and unevenly.

The aroma Even through the paper, quality preroll gives off perceptible aromas. An odorless or hay-scented preroll is often a sign of trim or old material.

Variety indication On the legal market, a good preroll indicates the variety, THC or CBD content and origin. The absence of this information is a warning sign.

The color of ash For consumption, a uniform white ash indicates clean combustion. Black or loose ash indicates poor quality or poor flower curing.

Preroll conservation

Like all forms of cannabis, preroll is degraded by heat, light, humidity and oxygen - all of which accelerate the breakdown of the plant. THC and terpenes. Consumed within a week of purchase, preroll in its original closed tube remains optimal. For longer storage, place the tube in an airtight jar away from light and heat.
