What is a joint?

A seal is a hemp or cannabis cigarette that is often rolled by hand. A cannabis joint that contains both cannabis and tobacco is called spliff, whereas a tobacco leaf—or a hollowed-out cigar—filled with cannabis is a blunt.

What you need to roll a joint

To roll a cannabis joint, you'll need a few essential items:

  • Cannabis, usually about a third of a gram per joint
  • Grinder
  • Rolling tray
  • Rolling papers
  • Filter or cardboard

Grind the cannabis

Use a grinder to separate and grind the flower evenly. A grinder produces a consistent size and texture, resulting in a smoother, more consistent smoke. If you don’t have a grinder, crumble the bud with your fingers. Work gently to minimize damage to the cannabis trichomes by removing stems or seeds and ensuring the pieces are roughly the same small size.

Make a cardboard box

Many tobacco shops sell pre-made paper cones to use as a filter for a joint. Although these cones aren’t essential, they help reinforce the filter and make it easier to hold the joint. The paper also increases airflow through the joint and minimizes the risk of burning your lips or inhaling tiny bits of cannabis.

To make a joint, take a piece of thick paper or cardboard and cut out a rectangular strip about 2 centimeters wide. Fold most of the paper into an accordion pleat, then wrap the remaining piece of paper around the accordion section. Business cards are actually very useful for making rolling papers. Glass and wooden filters are an excellent alternative to paper and can be found at tobacco shops or your favorite headshop.

Fill out the form

Place your rolling paper on the tray with the sticky side facing away from you. Position the cardboard where you want the filter to be, and sprinkle the cannabis onto the paper in a column aligned with the filter. Distribute the flower evenly throughout the joint and avoid overfilling it.

How to roll a joint cylindrical (classic, with the same diameter along the entire length), spread the cannabis evenly along the entire length of the paper. For a joint conical (more popular, easier to hold and light), place less cannabis near the filter and more toward the open end; the result is a flared cone. Pre-rolled cones bought in stores eliminate this step entirely.

Roll the joint

It’s finally time to roll. Make sure the sticky side of the paper is facing you, and take your filled sheet. Use your thumbs and index fingers to pinch the paper into a taco shape, gently shaking it back and forth to distribute the contents evenly and pack them down a bit. It’s okay if some of the flower falls out—you can refill it later. Roll it into a cylinder, not too loose so it doesn’t burn unevenly, and not too tight so it doesn’t restrict airflow.

Place the non-sticky side of the rolling paper over the contents of the joint and slowly roll it toward the sticky side, tucking the mixture in as you go. Use your thumbs to roll and your index fingers to support the outside. Lick or moisten the sticky tab and start at the end near the cardboard to slowly seal the joint.

Once it’s stuck in place, use a rolling stick, a pen, or another long, cylindrical object to press the joint down toward the filter tip. That’s where you can add any weed that fell out while rolling.

Seal the deal

Fold the excess paper at the end of the seam to finish it off.

Enjoy!

Finally, it’s time to light up your joint and take a puff.

How to Choose Rolling Paper

Most rolling papers are made from fibers derived from sources other than wood, such as flax, hemp, sisal, rice straw, and alfa… The type of rolling paper What makes for the perfect joint really comes down to personal preference. Cannabis smokers who regularly smoke joints and spliffs tend to have their own favorite rolling paper. Preferences can be influenced by how easy a smoker finds it to work with a certain type of rolling paper, the flavor of the smoke, how well a certain type of paper burns, or other subjective factors.

Many cannabis users particularly enjoy using hemp rolling papers, as this makes the entire joint a cannabis-derived product. Beyond rolling paper, some cannabis smokers like to use cigarillo papers—made from tobacco leaves—to roll and smoke blunts.

To choose the right material for your rolling paper, you need to strike a balance. Ideally, you want the thinnest paper possible to bring out the flavor of the tobacco you’ve chosen. But if you’re just learning to roll, ultra-thin paper isn’t the best choice. So, start with hemp paper, which is easy to work with. Then, you can move on to thinner rice papers that produce a smooth, slow-burning smoke. Ultra-thin papers are the pinnacle of clean smoking papers, but they tear easily in the hands of beginners.

Flavored paper is another option. Just make sure it pairs well with the strain you’ve chosen and doesn’t contain any chemicals.

In addition to the different materials, rolling papers come in various sizes. Here are the most common ones:

  • Long leaves: the classic version
  • Double width: not very popular, high paper-to-grass ratio
  • King: larger and with a longer burn time, easily accommodates a group of five people
  • King Slim: as long as a King, but narrower; recommended for experienced riders only.

You can also make your life easier and buy cone-shaped rolling papers—pre-rolled papers shaped like cones, complete with filters, ready to be filled.

Tips for rolling joints more easily

  • Choose the right sheet size. Although it may be tempting to start with king-size paper because it seems easy to handle, it’s actually a bit too large. Most experts recommend starting with standard-length sheets until you feel comfortable
  • Think big. Joint-rolling enthusiasts can choose whatever paper they like and roll the perfect doobie. But when you’re just starting out, go for thicker paper. Hemp is an excellent option. After a little practice, you’ll be able to switch to paper so thin it’s almost invisible
  • Start with the cardboard. Hold the end of the cardboard firmly between your index finger and thumb. This stabilizes the whole thing, positions your hand correctly, and provides a good starting point for rolling it up.
  • Take your time. Before rolling, take a moment to look at the line of cannabis in the paper. Is it evenly distributed? Have you gently shaken the paper back and forth to pack it down a bit? If not, take a moment to adjust it before you start rolling
  • Don't rush. You don’t have to lick and seal it right after rolling. If you’ve rolled it and the joint isn’t to your liking, unroll it and try again. Even if you waste a sheet and need another one, it’s better than having the whole thing fall apart while you’re smoking it or passing it around.
  • Lick gently. When you're ready to stick your joint together, there's no need to drool all over the place or—thank goodness—put the whole joint in your mouth. A little moisture along the adhesive strip will be enough to hold it together.
  • Squeeze and press down. Once you’ve filled your joint and rolled it tightly, twist the paper slightly at the open end and give it a gentle push. This will ensure that it’s tightly packed and will light up easily
  • Practice. Like anything else, it takes a little practice to learn how to roll the perfect joint. Don’t be afraid to sit down with a few leaves and roll until it feels more natural. Maybe try rolling a few on your own before offering to roll one for a crowd. Be patient, and the art of rolling will soon hold no secrets for you.

Why isn't my joint burning right? Common mistakes

It pulls too hard / is too tight : The cannabis is ground too finely or packed too tightly, blocking airflow. Solution: Grind it coarser, roll it less tightly, or use a sharp object to gently fluff up the contents through the open end.

It burns on one side (the «run») : The cannabis isn't distributed evenly, or the paper has been licked or moistened unevenly. Solution: Quickly run the lighter flame around the entire circumference of the joint as you light it, without inhaling, to ensure even burning.

It turns itself off : The joint is too loose or the cannabis is too damp. Well-dried cannabis and a tight but not too tight roll solve 90% of the time. Quick fix: Relight it and take a gentle puff to reignite the ember.

The sheet is peeling off : Not enough saliva or saliva not evenly distributed on the adhesive strip. Solution: Moisten the entire length of the strip regularly before applying it, starting at the end of the filter.

The cardboard is getting soggy (excess moisture) : Standard paper rolling papers absorb moisture when used. Glass or wooden filters eliminate this problem. Otherwise, roll the paper tighter to reduce the surface area that comes into contact with your lips.
