Canned cannabis: the new trend (2017)

Canned cannabis

One of the latest trends in the United States is the sale of canned cannabis—often featuring high-end strains—in packaging that looks more like canned tuna flakes than dried weed. Is it just a fad, or is it actually useful?

The real benefit of these cans lies in their ability to preserve these precious flowers. While plastic containers remain inexpensive and glass jars offer a premium look, exposing the weed to oxygen and light immediately diminishes the product’s vibrancy.

This oxidation process also acts as a catalyst for the mold and other bacteria, which can cause some problems when cannabis is consumed.

The only way to ensure that cannabis is stored without oxygen is to hermetically seal its container. Storing food in nitrogen has been used for many years in the food industry to preserve the freshness of products, allow for longer transport times, or extend a product’s shelf life.

That’s why we’re seeing more and more canned weed. We’ve come across brands like Henry’s Original, Willie's Reserve or Lemon Tree get started with preserved flowers (the «boxed flowers»).

And that is the main goal these brands are striving for: to ensure the preservation of their exceptional products, while guaranteeing that the end consumer always receives the same quality, regardless of shipping conditions or storing weed.

There are also two other advantages worth noting: the boxes are 100% recyclable, and are child-proof (difficult for children to open).

For now, these containers hold only dried flowers, but they should soon be adapted to store concentrates or pre-rolled joints.
