Australian Senate advises against cannabis legalization project

The movement to legalize cannabis for adult use in Australia has hit a major roadblock. The Australian Senate’s Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee has officially recommended against passing the bill to legalize cannabis, the Legalising Cannabis Bill 2023.

This bill, introduced by Green Party Senator David Shoebridge, was intended to legalize personal cultivation, to regulate sales and authorize cannabis consumption areas. The Greens' Ongoing Efforts to Legalize Cannabis

Mr. Shoebridge’s report highlights the bill’s potential benefits, such as job creation, reducing pressure on the judicial system, diverting proceeds from organized crime, funding essential services, and expanding consumer choice.

Mr. Shoebridge said that the Greens would now seek a vote in the Senate and mobilize their supporters to put pressure on local lawmakers. The party highlights public support for this reform, citing the 2017–26 National Drug Strategy, which acknowledges that the illegal status of cannabis has fostered a thriving black market with significant health and social costs. Shoebridge asserts that millions of Australians want this change and that legalizing cannabis would bring Australia in line with many other countries and U.S. states. that have already adopted similar reforms.
