A cannabis-based sleeping pill in the works in Israel
«Take one or two puffs, depending on the dosage, and within ten minutes you'll be drowsy enough to fall asleep.».
That is the statement from Bill Levine, Executive Director of CannRx Technologies. This U.S. subsidiary of the Israeli giant Izun Pharmaceuticals took advantage of the CannaTech event in Tel Aviv to present a new treatment for insomnia.
To develop this product, CannRX partnered with another Israeli company, iCan. The product, named «ican.sleep» consists of a precise dose of cannabinoids to be consumed in vaporized form. This therapeutic medication would influence as well as on the user's sleep duration.
Leaders in this market segment
This drug will undergo clinical trials this year. According to Bill Levine, »Several studies indicate that 20% of the Western population suffers from insomnia or sleep disorders; this is a serious medical problem.» Jeffrey Friedland, a board member and businessman since 1979, sees a good business opportunity: »We’re not just a research and development company; we want to make short-term profits in the U.S. medical cannabis market. ican.sleep will be our first product.».
According to PR Newswire, long-term treatment for insomnia appears to be a market segment that has yet to be fully tapped. Treatments in Europe and the United States seem to focus solely on the short-term use of sleeping pills.
«As someone who suffers from insomnia, I'm proud to be part of the new generation of cannabis products.". Standardized cannabis treatments are now a reality. » says Saul Kaye, founder and CEO of iCAN. He takes stock of the situation in Israel: «We conduct more research in Israel than anywhere else. We have done a better job of combating cannabis-related stigma than other countries, and we have a a focus on the medical use of cannabis rather than its legalization ».
«In the United States, recreational cannabis is used for medical purposes.»
«You can do science by Israel, and it has been approved by the FDA. That is how cross-pollination will take place. Real companies with real technology, real science, and real data. These are the elements that will enable this industry to move forward,» says Saul Kaye
He takes a swipe at the Americans and their medical cannabis programs: »There isn’t really any medical cannabis in the United States. There’s recreational cannabis being used for medical purposes.» An open-air research center that’s raising eyebrows among the Americans attending the Cannatech trade show: »There’s a fantastic environment here, and I believe that Israel, even though it’s a small country, has carved out a unique niche in the market by becoming the epicenter of high-quality research.»
Would this treatment spell the end of the Bedodo For those who have trouble falling asleep at night?
