Is white ash a guarantee of quality for cannabis?

White cannabis ash

There is a deeply held belief among cannabis users that the color of the ash from a joint is a surefire way to determine the quality of the weed.

Many smokers will tell you that black ash is a sure sign that the cannabis was poorly grown, and that white ash—the white ashes – are a sure sign that the cannabis is of high quality. But is there any scientific evidence to support these claims?

Where did this idea come from?

Although it is almost impossible to trace the very first time ash was used as an indicator of quality, it is believed to have originated in an entirely different field. The quality of a cigar is often judged by its color, and the fact that this is stated on the website of the Cigar Association of America is a good indicator of where this idea came from. It is believed that Cuban cigars, when they were banned from the legal U.S. market, were sold on the black market, and that the white color of the ash was the main way to tell a genuine Cuban cigar from a fake one.

The Color of Ashes in Other Contexts

The tobacco industry has been conducting research on its own products for decades. Although these studies were not focused on determining the «best» ash color, some of their findings may help answer our questions.

The main objective of these studies was to determine which ingredients in tobacco promoted or inhibited the combustion of cigarettes. This led to further research aimed at determining the effects of fertilizers on tobacco smoke and ash.

It turned out that the use of fertilizer had no effect on the alkaline composition or sulfur levels in tobacco leaves. However, the curing process (also known as curing), which is now considered an essential process for improving the quality of tobacco, has had an effect.

What does this have to do with the color of the ash? A recent study, which examined the influence of certain microbiota and metabolites during tobacco fermentation, showed that effective curing improves aroma quality and burnability, as well as the color of the ash. In fact, the researchers state, among other things, that «white is best, followed by gray.».

Aging, Maturation, and Moisture Content

It therefore seems that effective fermentation or «aging» of tobacco helps improve the quality of the product and produce white ash. But what about the curing and flushing cannabis? What does that actually mean, and does it affect the quality of the cannabis flowers and the color of the ash?

Just like fermentation, the curing is considered a process for improving the quality of cannabis. Freshly harvested cannabis flowers should undergo a curing period before being consumed to enhance the plant’s properties and reduce moisture levels. The drying cannabis also leads to a significant reduction in chlorophyll in the plant.

The humidity level can significantly affect the combustion of plant material. As might be expected, plants with high moisture content do not burn as efficiently as dry plant material. Incomplete combustion—which occurs when the material being burned does not reach optimal temperatures—generally produces darker ash. In contrast, efficient combustion tends to produce lighter, even white, ash.

Actually, research Studies of forest fire ash indicate that combustion temperatures play a major role in the properties of the ash, including its color. Furthermore, ash produced by low-temperature combustion is still rich in organic compounds, of which carbon is the main component. At higher temperatures, carbon is volatilized (it turns into gas), leaving behind ash composed mainly of magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, silicon, and phosphorus. Oh, and guess what? The tobacco industry used to add magnesium and calcium acids to its tobacco to produce white ash!

Cannabis «flushing»

The term «flushing» refers to the process of removing any remaining nutrients from the cannabis plant. Essentially, this means that during the final weeks of cultivation, cannabis plants absorb only water, rather than a nutrient solution. It has been said that effectively «flushing» cannabis improves the plant’s quality for consumption, though it is not actually known whether this is truly the case.

It is therefore not certain that the effect of rinsing on the color of the ashes is due to a higher-quality product.

Final Conclusion

Based on the available evidence, it appears that the main reason for the lighter color of the ash from certain types of cannabis is not due to rinsing but more likely to the temperatures reached during combustion. To that end, a curing This method seems to promote the formation of whiter ash, and since curing is widely associated with a product that is easier to smoke, it can be said that white ash is synonymous with higher quality.

But, ultimately, there is little solid evidence to support the theory that the white ashes are a sign of «better» cannabis.
