Sales of cannabis clones and seeds soar in Germany

On April 1, 2024, the’Germany made history by becoming the largest European country to implement a national measure to legalize cannabis use for adults. German adults can now legally grow, possess, and use cannabis.

And it would seem that the cannabis clones and seeds are already proving to be very popular!

The Popularity of Cannabis Cultivation

According to a recent YouGov survey, 7% of the participants reported that they had already purchased cannabis clones or seeds since legalization took effect. This trend is particularly pronounced among young adults, as 14 % of survey participants aged 18 to 34 reported having made such purchases. In contrast, only 2% of Germans over the age of 55 have purchased cannabis cuttings or seeds.

Given that Germany’s adult population is estimated at 70 million people, these results suggest the existence of a substantial market for clones and cannabis seeds. Future cannabis clubs are expected to become the main sources of these products, further increasing access to different cannabis strains and fueling the growth of the personal cultivation sector.

The legalization of commercial sales of cannabis clones and seeds under the Germany's new cannabis law (CanG) has opened up numerous opportunities for entrepreneurs and innovators. The growing interest in home cultivation goes beyond clones and seeds. Growers need a variety of products and services to grow cannabis, including:

• From culture media for planting cuttings or seeds
• From nutrients to feed the plants
• Systems for’interior lighting
• Environmental Control Equipment
• From harvesting and drying equipment
• Educational materials (books, guides, etc.)

These subsectors represent a diverse range of business opportunities within the broader cannabis cultivation industry.

In addition, the elimination of the Historical quotas for domestic medical cannabis production under the new CanG Act is expected to significantly boost the domestic production of commercial medical cannabis. In 2023, the’Germany imported a record 34.6 metric tons of medical cannabis products from other countries. With the new regulations in place, this reliance on imports is expected to decrease as domestic production increases.

The synergy between the rise of personal recreational use and the expansion of domestic medical cannabis production will ultimately drive the overall growth of the cannabis industry in Germany.
