Trump posts a video on the benefits of Cannabis for the elderly
On Sunday, President Donald Trump shared—and then deleted—a video touting the health benefits of cannabis, suggesting that Medicare’s coverage of CBD would be «the most important initiative of the century for seniors» health.”.
Although Trump did not add a comment to his post, the video presents CBD as a tool for modernizing elder care, explaining that the endocannabinoid system is a key factor in maintaining balance in the body. According to the video, the CBD may help manage pain, inflammation, cognitive decline and other age-related conditions more safely than certain medications.
The video also claims that expanding access to CBD could generate significant economic benefits, citing a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers that estimates 64 billion dollars the annual savings in healthcare costs if cannabis were fully integrated into the system.
Is a reclassification on the horizon?
The timing of this publication is significant. The White House continues to review the potential reclassification of cannabis at the federal level, which would reduce federal penalties for possession and distribution, expand medical research on cannabis, or allow businesses in the cannabis industry to claim standard tax deductions.
The Commonwealth Project, the organization behind the video, has already participated in federal hearings on reclassification, which have began under the Biden administration but were halted. The group argued that the reclassification would give older adults, researchers, and doctors greater certainty as they explore the medical potential of CBD.
The video also highlights the 2018 Farm Bill, enacted during Trump’s first term, which legalized hemp containing up to 0.3% of THC at the federal level. The narrative describes this legislation as the «first step» toward integrating cannabis into the healthcare system.
She argues that the next step should be to educate doctors about the endocannabinoid system, to establish federal standards for CBD and to allow seniors to access these products through Medicare.
Currently, despite its growing popularity (20% of older Americans reportedly use CBD to treat conditions ranging from arthritis to sleep disorders), doctors lack formal training, and the FDA has not yet provided clear regulatory standards.
