Study: CBD may slow brain cell death
A study published last month suggests that the CBD may help slow the deterioration of brain cells.
The study, titled «Neuroprotective Effect of Cannabidiol Against Hydrogen Peroxide in Hippocampal Neuron Cultures,» examined the potential neuroprotective and neurotoxic effects of CBD in vitro.
The researchers specifically studied the effectiveness of CBD against the neurotoxicity caused by oxidative stress, a type of damage to cellular components involved in the development of cancers, strokes, and neurodegenerative diseases.
«Although CBD has been shown to have both neurotoxic and neuroprotective effects on hippocampal neurons in a context in vitro, », the use of CBD at low concentrations—which does not cause toxic effects on neurons—significantly protected neurons from oxidative stress (H2O2), confirming its neuroprotective properties," the report notes of the study.
The study acknowledges its limitations and calls for further research. The results in vitro However, they seem to confirm the neuroprotective potential of CBD. «The biological mechanisms by which CBD acts on neurons have not been fully elucidated, but our research has clearly confirmed that CBD is highly effective at neutralizing H2O2-induced neurotoxicity in primary hippocampal neurons, which is closely implicated in thethe onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases» such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the study’s authors wrote.
These researchers noted that further research should examine the effects of CBD derived from its various methods of administration, including «ingestion, inhalation, and transdermal or topical administration.».
