This start-up wants to grow cannabis on board the International Space Station
After outdoor and indoor, spacedoor? Kentucky-based company Space Tango believes in all three, and is already planning to grow industrial hemp and cannabis varieties CBD-rich plants in microgravity aboard the International Space Station. Researchers hope that low gravity will reveal new characteristics in plants.
«When plants are stressed, they draw on a genetic reservoir to produce compounds that enable them to adapt and survive, told Techcrunch Dr Joe Chappell, a member of Space Tango's scientific team specializing in drug development and design. «Understanding how plants respond in an environment where the stress of traditional gravity is eliminated can provide new insights into how adaptations occur and how researchers might take advantage of these changes to discover new biomedical traits or applications.»
Space Tango has installed two mini-laboratories on the ISS and plans to send samples there six times a year for professional and academic customers.
While exploring the genetics of hemp continues to attract increasing attention from scientists, This unusual cultivation site could offer new insights into the many facets of Cannabis.
«Whenever a new type of physical platform has been exploited, such as electromagnetism, it has led to the exponential growth of new knowledge, human benefit and capital formation,» explains Kris Kimel, co-founder and president of Space Tango. «Using microgravity, we envision a future where many of the next breakthroughs in health, plant biology and technology may well occur on planet Earth.»
In the meantime, ISS astronauts will have plenty to relax about in self-production!
