The Myrcene Hemp Gin: Australian gin distilled with cannabis terpenes
The Cannabis Company, an Australian company, has just launched “the world’s first gin distilled with cannabis terpenes.» As the name suggests, it is made with myrcene, one of the terpenes the most common cannabinoids. It is found in nearly half of all existing cannabis strains, as well as in other plants such as mangoes, citrus fruits, thyme, and hops.
Cannabis, the new food trend
The company uses raw hemp as a raw material, from which it extracts a selection of terpenes that it then adds to the gin during the distillation process. The terpenes are used for their taste, aroma, and effects. Cromac Sheehan, the company’s marketing director, explains: «Myrcene has a fruity, woody, and citrusy scent that is very complex and, (in our opinion and after extensive R&D) is the scent profile closest to cannabis.» He adds that in high doses, it has positive effects and is considered a dietary supplement for wellness purposes.
Recently, there has been a global surge in the use of cannabis and its non-intoxicating components in food—particularly CBD and terpenes, as well as seeds. Experts even predict that this will be a major trend of 2019.
The cannabis beverages are already spreading rapidly in the United States, and some are even containing THC. Here, however, there are no psychoactive effects, but rather «a feeling of joy and euphoria combined with a sense of relaxation,» according to Cromac Sheehan. He also points out the therapeutic properties of terpenes such as pain relief and the reduction of inflammation.
The Cannabis Company specializes in the production of hemp-based dietary supplements. Given the success of this trend, although myrcene may be extract Unlike other plants, its association with cannabis has become a powerful marketing tool. The first batch of 300 bottles, priced at €61 each, sold out in three days, and in the second batch, the 1,000 bottles available for pre-order were sold out in just one week. In light of this success, TThe Cannabis Company is considering exporting its gin to other markets, possibly New Zealand, which recently announced the legalization of hemp seeds as a dietary supplement.
