In recent months, The Netherlands has decided to implement a cannabis cultivation pilot program to supply the country’s coffeeshops with legal cannabis. The current situation with Dutch coffeeshops is that they are permitted to sell cannabis but have no legal source from which to obtain it. The government has so far been working on the conditions and requirements that will apply to producers, coffeeshop owners, and municipalities participating in the pilot program, as well as to product packaging. The full regulations for the pilot program are expected to be published later this month.
To apply, growers must be residents of the Netherlands or have a business in the Netherlands. They will also need a certificate of good conduct. A total of 10 growers will be selected through a process that will take approximately 6 months. Once the growers have been selected, the government will announce the timeline for when «legal» cannabis will go on sale in participating coffeeshops.
The government is also working on agreements regarding financial support for the 10 participating municipalities. Independent studies will be conducted to assess the pilot program’s impact on safety, public order, and public health.
