New York authorizes self-cultivation of medical cannabis
On Tuesday, New York State voted to adopt rules regarding home cultivation for patients treated with cannabis.
The Cannabis Control Board (CCB) has approved a resolution to allow patients to grow their own plants for personal use. The adoption of the resolution on growing medical cannabis at home comes about a year after the initial proposal regulatory process and several months after the board approved the revised rules following a public comment period.
The CCB has now asked the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) to officially submit the approved regulations to the New York State Department of State.
The new law will allow patients and registered caregivers to grow up to six plants, only three of which may be mature. They will be allowed to possess up to 2.5 kilograms of cannabis derived from these plants, which is in accordance with state law on the legalization of adult use.
The rules governing home cultivation for medical cannabis patients and caregivers will take effect on October 5. Tremaine Wright, president of the CCB, said this development marks «an exciting milestone for our program to medical marijuana« .
OCM Executive Director Chris Alexander said at the end of the hearing that the office has «prioritized patient access in this program,» and «that will continue to be a priority.».
«I'm really pleased that we can offer this more affordable option to patients so they can have access to this medication,« he said.
