Now that cannabis is legal in New York, how do you buy it?
The Cannabis has been legalized in New York State in March 2021. Just a few days before the year turned to 2023, the state finally opened its first legal recreational dispensary on December 29 at 4:20 p.m. Here’s what you need to know to legally purchase cannabis in New York.
What is allowed?
Effective immediately, all adults aged 21 and older may possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis (84 grams) or 0.85 ounces of concentrates (24 grams) at any given time.
At home, New Yorkers are allowed to possess up to 2.5 kilograms of cannabis and grow up to 12 plants.
It should also be noted that all the Cannabis-Related Criminal Records in New York State have been officially deleted.
How can you tell if a cannabis store is legal?
For now, there is only one legal store in the state. Housing Works Cannabis Co. is the first legal recreational cannabis dispensary and is located at 750 Broadway in New York City’s East Village. The business is expected to display a QR code on the property where everyone can see it, so that customers can verify whether a cannabis store is, in fact, legal or not.
When will other clinics open?
At present, the‘The State of New York has issued 36 licenses retail stores, located in various boroughs, which are expected to open in the coming weeks. The official dates have not yet been announced. The New York Office of Cannabis Management regularly provides updates on the progress of the legal cannabis program.
Does a person need identification?
Yes. To purchase cannabis at legal dispensaries, you must present a form of identification, which will be verified. Tourists are welcome at New York City dispensaries.
What products are available, and what are the prices?
The dispensaries offer a wide range of products, including cannabis flowers, vape pens, and edibles, pre-rolled joints, and even CBD treats for pets. In terms of pricing, the website of Housing Works indicates that a one-eighth of an ounce of cannabis (3.5 grams) ranges from $40 to $60.
Where can you legally smoke cannabis in New York?
Consumers may smoke or vape cannabis anywhere that smoking tobacco is permitted by law. Workplaces and public spaces are therefore off-limits, as are restaurants and bars.
Unlike tobacco use, cannabis use is not permitted inside motor vehicles (even when parked) or in outdoor dining areas at restaurants.
Cities and municipalities may also establish outdoor consumption areas where people can use cannabis.
What is the difference between legal and illegal cannabis stores?
Following the legalization of cannabis, an impressive amount of cannabis stores, trucks and pop-ups have appeared in the state.
Although many of these illegal stores may sell high-quality cannabis, the difference between them and licensed stores is that the latter sell products that are regulated and tested by the state. These products are likely safer, of higher quality, and manufactured under regulated conditions.
