New York grants first 36 cannabis retail licenses
L’Office of Cannabis Management, the agency responsible for implementing and overseeing the legalization of cannabis in New York State, issued the first retail licenses for adult-use cannabis to 36 applicants on Monday, including 28 people who have had run-ins with the law and 8 nonprofit organizations, including LIFE Camp, the first nonprofit organization led by a Black woman.
The candidates were selected from a group of 903 applicants, each of whom was vying for one of the 175 cannabis retail licenses to be issued in the state.
New York City authorities plan to issue 150 of these licenses to businesses, with the remaining 25 reserved for nonprofit organizations. The first round of licenses was reserved for businesses owned by people who have been disproportionately affected by the war on drugs.

The regulatory agency also announced on Twitter that it would allow eligible companies to start with delivery services.
«This will help boost sales and enable these small business owners to generate capital and expand their operations,» the OCM tweeted. Officials had previously stated that they intended to launch legal sales for adult use by the end of the year.
The State of New York has legalized adult cannabis use in March 2021, but had not yet issued a license to sell it.
Among the various reasons for the delay, a Michigan-based company filed a lawsuit against the State of New York and its cannabis regulatory agency last September, alleging that the agency gave preferential treatment to in-state companies. However, the lawsuit was dismissed.
Under pressure from the launch of one of the country’s most anticipated legal cannabis markets, the OCM has decided to award certain dispensary licenses to entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations—a significant step that comes as the Authorities are struggling to crack down on unlicensed vendors.
