Mauritius considers legalizing medical cannabis
Mauritius's health minister recently announced that a committee would meet to decide on the possible legalization of medical cannabis.
The committee, chaired by Professor Theeshan Bahorun, executive director of the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council, will be composed of several scientific and regulatory partners. At the meeting scheduled for today, the committee will review its responsibilities regarding the use of medical cannabis in Mauritius. Following these discussions, a report will be submitted to the Ministry of Health.
However, this work is likely to take some time, according to an official familiar with the matter.
«It will all depend on how quickly the ministry wants the matter to move forward,» he said. According to this official, who is familiar with the matter, a committee began preliminary work several months ago. However, few meetings have been scheduled, as the committee has been waiting for the recent decision by the United Nations on medical cannabisto decide on the next steps. Going forward, the committee should begin by reviewing the CND’s vote and determining what changes this might entail for Mauritius.
According to one of its officials, the Ministry of Health has taken note of the latest developments and is already acting on the new information. The official also emphasized that this will take some time and that the results will be communicated in due course.
