Luxembourg government adopts legalization of self-cultivation
Last Friday, the Luxembourg government approved the bill aimed at updating the law regarding cannabis in the Grand Duchy. The law will allow adults to grow up to four cannabis plants at home, «exclusively from seeds,» and to consume them in private.
The bill must now be passed by the Chamber of Deputies before it can legally take root.
Consumption in public will remain prohibited, and a decriminalization threshold of 3 grams is expected to be enacted, with possession up to that amount subject to a fine of €145. Possession of more than 3 grams of cannabis will continue to be subject to criminal penalties.
«It must be acknowledged that the repressive drug policy, which has been in place for 40 or 50 years, has been a failure,» Justice Minister Sam Tanson emphasized in late October.
The Luxembourg government had initially announced the full legalization of cannabis. The coronavirus pandemic and a number of border pressures However, these developments have «slowed down this initiative, which was launched with great enthusiasm. But slowing down does not mean giving up. The project remains on the agenda,» the minister confirmed.
With the German neighbor who will present his proposal for legalization By the end of the year, however, Luxembourg will no longer be alone in advocating for legalization.
