Study: 82% of migraine sufferers say cannabis provides relief

A study gathering data from nearly 10,000 migraine sufferers in the USA and Canada found that a third of migraine patients had tried medical cannabis or cannabinoids to relieve their pain and other symptoms, and 82% of those who used cannabis found it effective in relieving pain.

The study was launched via Migraine Buddy, a migraine tracking app designed by Healint, a health technology company. Participants consumed cannabis by a variety of methods, such as smoking vape pen, THC, tinctures, oils or food products containing THC. The study does not distinguish one form of consumption as being significantly more effective than another.

«Cannabis is becoming a leading treatment option for chronic pain patients, especially migraine sufferers,» a declared Healint CEO and co-founder François Cadiou.

«As more and more states in the U.S. legalize cannabis for medical purposes, migraine patients are becoming more familiar with cannabis as a natural remedy that can help relieve migraines and even prevent them. more needs to be done to properly inform individuals about the use and dosage of cannabis to treat migraines.»

The results are similar to those of a 2019 study, published in The Journal of Pain, which found that inhaled cannabis halved the severity of headaches and migraines. However, the efficacy of cannabis diminished over time, as migraine patients seemed to develop a tolerance to the drug and used higher doses to relieve pain.

Another study published in the Journal of Integrative Medicine, reported that 94% of migraine sufferers who inhaled cannabis experienced symptom relief within two hours.
