Emmanuel Macron finally in favor of contraventionalizing cannabis
Many media and politicians are attacking presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron over his lack of a program. In the columns of Figaro today, Emmanuel Macron talks about decriminalizing cannabis.
In September, the former French Minister of the Economy expressed an interest in legalizing cannabis. Speaking on France Inter, he said: «We can see that legalizing cannabis is effective in some way». Later, in his book Révolution, he wrote that he was in favor of decriminalizing small quantities. When questioned by the media on the issue, he shrugs it off, declaring that the subject should be discussed between members of parliament and representatives of civil society in a current mandate.
But today, in the columns of Le Figaro, Macron is chasing the conservative and declaring himself in favor of a making cannabis users subject to fines. So, apparently, he wants to relieve the courts and police officers of precious time, without tackling the public health problems involved or the illegal production channels. He thus confirms what he wrote in his book: «The classic political response is to claim permanent and general intransigence. This is obviously an illusion.»
A Conservative rather than a Liberal
The liberal position candidate Emmanuel Macron's initial campaign might have led one to believe that he would bring a progressive, even economic, connotation to the legalization of cannabis. Not so. Back to Guigamp.
It's as if the Fillon affair is pushing candidate Macron to hunt down the wayward Republican voter. Until we know his firm and definitive position (I hear the wind is coming from the West tomorrow), to date, Emmanuel macron remains conservative on cannabis issues, among others.
