Croatia legalizes medical cannabis

A medical committee set up by the Ministry of Health decided in January of this year that the country should go ahead with legalization, as cannabis is proving effective in treating certain illnesses, in line with the latest medical and scientific advances.

The Ministry of Health has insisted on ensuring that THC-based treatments prescribed by Croatian doctors will be available to patients, notably by allowing pharmacy wholesalers to import such products.

It could be 4 months before the first cannabis-based products are actually available to patients, while Croatian health services determine which products are actually authorized.

Laboratory studies will also be needed to determine potential side effects, dosage requirements and conditions of use for THC-based products.

According to the medical committee's recommendations, products made from cannabis can be used to complement treatments for tumours, HIV, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease.’epilepsy in children, to reduce the symptoms of these diseases.

On the other hand, the committee advises against the use of cannabis in patients with Parkinson's disease, classic epilepsy, depression or psychiatric disorders.
