Illinois hopes to add 8 disorders to list that can be treated with cannabis
The Medical Cannabis Advisory Board is calling for the addition of 8 health conditions, including chronic pain syndrome, autism, osteoarthritis and post-traumatic stress disorder, to the list of conditions that can be treated with cannabis. medical marijuana in Illinois.
The proposal was rejected last month by Illinois Governor Bruce Rainer, but the Council is hoping for a different response this time, with the sale of medical marijuana now authorized.
The other disorders concerned are chronic traumatic pain, post-operative pain, incurable pain and irritable bowel syndrome. The Council is relying on individual testimonials and scientific studies to recommend the addition of disorders to the list of illnesses eligible for treatment with medical cannabis.
Illinois could be the first state to approve autism. Children will need written certifications from two Illinois doctors to use cannabis, an important safeguard against abuse. Adults will need just one signature.
«This will provide clinicians and families with other options for managing the symptoms of autism,» says Temple, the Council's president, adding that conventional treatments like risperidone have serious side effects.
Board member Dr. Eric Christoffel believes that the administration and legislature will quickly realize that cannabis sales will bring in significant revenue for the state. Illinois will collect 7% on each sale.
Illinois law already lists 39 disorders and illnesses that may qualify a patient for medical marijuana use under a doctor's prescription, including cancer, glaucoma, HIV, hepatitis C and several forms of sclerosis.
Chronic pain is approved by 18 of the 23 states that allow medical marijuana use, but not yet in Illinois. A recent compilation of 79 studies on 6,000 patients provided good evidence to support the use of medical cannabis as a treatment.
